Tyreright's environmental responsibility

Like most businesses, the tyre industry has an impact on the environment. We are conscious of the responsibilities this creates.

Environmental

Our initiatives

While there is no technology currently available to avoid them completely, we strive to do business the right way, creating green initiatives that minimise the effects of our operations and those of the whole industry on the environment.

We are working closely with our providers to minimise tyre waste, reduce our energy use and carbon emissions and adopt practices that use resources sustainably, which will help protect our future.

We believe that we all need to be smarter about how we use the earth’s limited resources. The small tyre disposal fee we collect helps fund new ways to reuse and recycle scrap tyres and prevents them from going to waste and landfill.

Tyreright store recycling programs

Each Tyreright store runs a recycling program in association with accredited recycling companies.

They collect a wide range of waste materials such as:

  • Tyres
  • Oils, coolants and lubricants
  • Steel
  • Lead weights
  • Batteries
  • Paper

Environmental

Partnering for the Planet

We have taken our commitment to the responsible recycling of waste tyres a step further by partnering with Tyrecycle, the country’s leading tyre collector, recycler and disposer.

Tyrecycle is also Australia’s largest tyre recycler with a country-wide network of collection capabilities and processing plants in every mainland state. Their rubber crumbing plant in Melbourne is Australia’s largest, with three times the capacity for rubber crumb production than their nearest rival.

The crumbed rubber they produce has a hundred and one uses. It is perfect for industrial, recreation, and decorative applications such as artificial turf, running, cycling and railway tracks, playground surfaces, roads and much more.

The consequences

Tyres that are not recycled can have a significant impact on the environment. When tyres are dumped in landfills or left in open areas, they take up a lot of space and can trap methane gases, which are harmful to the atmosphere.

In addition, tyres can leach toxic chemicals into the ground, polluting soil and groundwater. When tyres are burned, they release harmful pollutants and chemicals into the air, contributing to air pollution and potentially causing respiratory problems.

As a company, Tyreright takes pride in being at the forefront of the tyre recycling movement. By recycling used tyres, we reduce their negative impact on the environment and contribute to a more sustainable future.

Why it’s so important

Tyrecycle process approximately 17.5 million of the estimated 56 million passenger car tyres that end their life in Australia each year. It’s a massive achievement, but what about all the tyres that aren’t recycled? The inconvenient truth is that waste tyres represent:

Major fire hazards – 80% of all waste tyres are handled in ways that create an extreme fire risk.

Breeding grounds for Dengue Fever – in Australia and Asia, stockpiles of up to 15 million tyres each year become potential mosquito incubators.

Sources of toxic pollution – scrap tyres introduce over 2,600 tonnes of dangerous chemicals and heavy metals into the environment every year.

Rubbish – more than 2.5 million tyres are illegally dumped in rivers, lakes or the bush, or simply piled up in a corner of property somewhere.
