What are the best tyres for off-roading?

Whether you’re a seasoned off-roader or looking to get started, finding the right tyres for your 4WD is very important. Tyres have a huge impact on the terrain your 4WD can conquer, and they come in a few different varieties depending on where you want to go.

The reality is that not all tyres are fit for all types of surfaces. You wouldn’t wear a pair of thongs in the snow. Nor would you wear ski boots in the desert. The same goes for the tyres you put on your 4WD, especially when you are planning on going on some serious off-road adventures.

Picking the right tyres is very important because if you pick a tyre that is not fit for your purpose, you risk punctures, damaged tyres, a loss of traction, and an all-around bad time.

To help you decide what you need, we’ve put together a short guide to the best tyres for off-roading depending on your style.

Selecting the best tyres for off-roading is really simple. It doesn’t need to be as complicated as most people make it. Firstly you want to have a good idea of the different categories in which 4WD tyres come.

Mud terrain:

Think mud. Lots & lots of mud. Throw in some rocky outcrops, tree roots, steep inclines and even steeper declines. If this sounds like your average weekend, Mud Terrain tyres are for you.

With a chunky tread, these tyres are built to allow mud, grime & dirt to easily pass through your tyre, keeping your wheels planted firmly on the more grippy surface under the topsoil.

These tyres aren’t amazing on roads, so don’t fit them to your daily drive unless you love serious road noise and an uncomfortable ride.

At Tyreright we offer a wide range of tyres that are more than suitable for these four-wheel driving adventures. Get in touch.

All terrain:

As the name suggests, these are all-rounder tyres that not only take you around the local 4WD track but can also be used to get you to the track and home again.

They are usually better for on-road than offroad with a 60/40 split weighted towards on-road driving, but these are great for convenience, availability, and tend to come at a reasonable price as well. That said, you can find plenty of All-Terrain tyres that prioritise off-road, which is particularly important if your daily commute takes you around many of Australia’s country back-roads.

All-Terrain can suffer from Jack-of-all-trades-related problems. If you normally use your tyres on regular roads and only occasionally take your tyres off-road on easy-going trails, a Highway Terrain tyre is probably more suitable for you.

Similarly, if you need your 4WD to climb the side of a muddy mountain, All-terrain isn’t going to get you very far.

Here at Tyreright, we have a very wide range of tyres that are perfect for all terrains. If you would like to learn more about our all-terrain tyres simply, give us a call on 1300 575 701 now.

Highway terrain:

With a name like Highway Terrain, you probably don’t feel like these are particularly suitable tyres for off-roading… And you’d be right.

As mentioned above, if your 4WD adventures include the overwhelming difficulties presented by your driveway, the odd visit to a quiet beach, or setting up at a camping ground, Highway Terrain tyres are right for you.

Designed to spend most of their time on the road, these are great if your daily commute has you visiting the many metro roads found in Australia.

Highway terrain tyres provide a really smooth and comfortable drive on highways, freeways and main roads. The tread is nice and smooth and allows for maximum control and handling when on the road or turning around bends.

Just don’t intend to take your car off-roading on a regular basis unless you’ve got a way of swapping your tyres out for something a bit more suitable.

So which tyre should you choose?

The reality is each type of tyre has its own strengths depending on the situation you put them in, so we recommend you first select which type of tyre you need. Then, you can decide on which brand of tyre best aligns with your needs.

Here at Tyreright, we specialise in fulfilling our customer’s needs with a wide range of high-quality tyres. Whether you know what you want and just want the best deal possible, or if you need some help getting that perfect fit, speak to a tyre expert today.
